Building Department
The Building Department of Redding issues permits for all new construction, alterations, remodeling, additions, renovations, temporary structures, decks, storage buildings, and some repairs. Redding is regulated by state codes officially known as the “Connecticut State Building Codes.” Some permits are issued after approvals from the Planning, Zoning, Conservation, and Health Departments.
Today’s Building Department operates under State Building Codes, established by law in 1972, which superseded any and all local town building ordinances. The “State of Connecticut Building Code” is amended and updated by state legislation as requested by the State Building Department. The current State Building Code was updated and adopted into law on October 1, 2018, and consists of the following model documents and the October 1, 2018 Connecticut amendments:

The Town of Redding uses an Electronic Permit Application for all building permits. To use the View Permit service, you will need to register as a new user or log in with an existing registration. Click here for a download of registration instructions and frequently asked questions.
You can register by clicking on the “Electronic Permit Application” button or by visiting the Electronic Permit Application portal. Please use an email that you check regularly.
You will be able to communicate with the Building Department, upload documents, pay fees, print documents, and see the permit workflow using the electronic permit portal. However, you cannot request inspections through this portal. All requests for inspections must be made by phone—call 203-938-2558 during office hours.
Inquiries regarding the application process may be directed to the Building Department at 203-938-2558, where various handouts are available. Residents are encouraged to seek information about their projects or construction in general from the Building Official.
