The Redding Highway Department employs a Highway Superintendent, shop foreman, road foremen, mechanics, equipment operators, drivers, and laborers.

The Highway Department maintains 86.8 miles of improved roads and 6.16 miles of unimproved roads for a total of 92.96 miles. By contrast, in 1949, we had 46 miles of oiled roads, 16 miles of dirt roads, and 22.5 of state roads. We also maintain bridges, drainage, resurfacing programs, trees, and winter snow and ice removal. The Highway Department works closely with the Planning and Conservation Commissions to preserve wetlands and waterways.

The crew is most noticeable during snowstorms when work begins in the early hours of the morning. Keeping Redding’s hilly and curvy roads clear of snow and ice is important for the safety of school buses, residents, and commuters.

If you believe your mailbox was damaged as a result of snow removal activities, please submit a report using the Snowstorm Mailbox Damage Reporting Form by clicking the image below.

A Department of Public Works (DPW) foreman will inspect the mailbox to determine the cause of the damage. If the damage was caused by snow or ice thrown from a plow, rather than direct contact with the plow itself, the mailbox will not be repaired or replaced in accordance with Town policy. If you live on a state road (Route 53, 58 or 107), contact CT DOT Danbury at 203-797-4157.
